オタモイ地蔵尊は、小樽市オタモイ海岸にある地蔵菩薩で、江戸時代末期に北前船の海難犠牲者を供養するために建立されました。明治中期以降は「子宝地蔵」として広く信仰を集め、多くの参拝者が訪れました。
地蔵堂には、子宝を授かった信者から寄進された石仏が約3000体以上収められているといわれています。昭和初期には年間1万人もの参拝者が訪れる観光地となり、後に「オタモイ遊園地」が開園するきっかけとなりました。
現在は度重なるがけ崩れなどの影響により「土砂災害警戒区域」となっています。最後の堂守の死去により地蔵堂の老朽化が進んでおり、移設を含めた保存活用が課題となっています。
"Otamoi Jizo-son" is a Jizo Bosatsu statues located on Otamoi Beach in Otaru City. It was built at the end of the Edo period to offer memorial services to victims of the Kitamae Ship. Since the middle of the Meiji period (1868-1912), it has been widely worshipped as “Child Treasure Jizo” and has been visited by many worshippers.
The Jizo Hall is said to contain more than 3,000 stone statues of Buddha donated by believers who were blessed with children. In the early Showa period (1926-1989), the temple became a tourist attraction attracting as many as 10,000 worshippers a year, which later led to the opening of Otamoi Amusement Park.
Currently, the area is designated as a “Landslide Precaution Zone” due to repeated landslides. The Jizo Hall is deteriorating due to the death of the last keeper of the hall, and its preservation and utilization, including relocation, has become an issue.
